Private Sector Rent Statistics, Scotland, 2020 to 2023
Based largely on advertised rents, these latest statistics present a stark picture of rent rises across Scotland over the past 13 years. The figures show average asking rents or two bedroom properties rising across all 18 Broad Housing Market areas at an average rate of 14.3% in the year to September 2023. However, in six of these areas the rate of increase was below inflation as a result in areas like West Lothian, Perth and Kinross and Highland, rents fell in real terms.
But the variation by region is also evident with Lothian and Greater Glasgow reporting rents rising above inflation for all property sizes and types in contrast to Argyle and Bute. The Ayrshires and Dumfries and Galloway were rose by less than inflation across all property types.
